Add listings in address book (ie: "LA - Au Lac")

I've been a vegan since 1997 and a raw foodist since the end of 2000 and have created my own methods for finding appropriate foods when I travel. I'm sharing these methods with you now. I hope they help make your life easier!

I have found these methods are especially helpful in the United States, but they can also be used in other countries.

The first step begins prior to your trip. Use some of the web sites linked on our link page under "Dining Guides". Look up the cities you will be traveling to and/or through. My favorite site is "Happy Cow". The sites will offer you not just vegetarian dining, but also health food stores.

The second step: Copy the resulting listings to a Word document (any word processing program should work) for each city you are traveling to/through.

The third step: Edit the list to only the restaurants (such as vegan or raw foods) and health food stores that you are interested in. I also remove excess icons and text to make the document more concise. For ease of use, sort the list into either an alphabetical list or in order of the cities you are visiting. Print out the list and staple it.

Some important tips:

Verify the listings are current. Some of the restaurants and stores may have moved or may be out of business, so it is worth calling before heading to the business. If you call before your trip you can edit your list accordingly.

Ask the local health food stores for recommendations for vegetarian, vegan, or raw food restaurants in the area. They may have more current information, such as new restaurants.

Consider contacting area vegetarian groups (Vegetarian Organizations) for additional recommendations.

If you are not having luck, you can also look for area vegetarian email groups by searching for Yahoo email groups and inquiring on those lists for recommendations. Search by keywords, such as "detroit vegetarian" or "new york raw food".

Watch for vegetarian events or animal rights events (they often have vegetarian food booths) at your destination(s).

I have made many trips, including driving across the country and have found plenty of options for food following these methods. I usually find enough options with Happy Cow.

Happy Travelling!
